About me:

Kaila Bonnell (began in 2020)

Research Interests: critical weight studies, weight stigma, physical and health education, weight biases, health at every size, socio-cultural approach to health, sexuality education.

About me: After having completed my bachelor degree in physical and health education, I was curious to learn more about the over-looked piece of my degree title: Health education. I, therefore, decided to pursue a master’s degree to dig deeper into health education. Through a mix of personal experiences and academic experiences, I became passionate about critical fat studies, the way our Western societies are shaped by the thin ideal and how that ideal permeates in physical and health education. Having learned about the importance of discussing health critically, I am now trying to develop the socio-cultural side of a digital magazine I co-created in July 2020 (orbitexercise.com) Our magazine works with researchers and students-researchers from a variety of health fields and contexts with the objective of presenting a broad array of reliable articles that allows readers to think about how it applies to their reality, and ultimately, come up with conclusions of their own. In my personal time, I have the privilege of being able to enjoy movement outdoors with friends and family. I also really enjoy reading, and sitting in a quiet space.

Hannah Sanvido (Dr. Petherick as co-supervisor) (began in 2021)

Research Interests: Socio-Cultural Issues, Sport, Gender, Social Justice

About me: I am a lover of sports, learning and taking opportunities. I have a background in health, fitness, youth work and leadership, currently co-coordinating the YMCA’s Plusone Mentoring Program. In 2018, I graduated as the valedictorian from Douglas College with her Bachelors of Physical Education and Coaching, Associate of Arts Degree and Sports Science Diploma. At Douglas College, I produced, hosted and co-edited a 6 part video series entitled Women in Sport: Local Success Stories. Shown to over 10,000 viewers during the lead up to the Women’s Soccer National College Championships, this series showcased diverse women who spoke about their sporting accomplishments, athletic challenges and what can be done to change the lack of female representation in sport. My goal is to bring this spirit of inclusivity and diversity to every project I take on.
